About

Ukraine has used the hryvnia as its currency since it gained independence from the Russian Empire in 1917. Before that, its currency was briefly the karbovanet. Soviet currency was introduced in 1922 and remained in place for the next 70 years. Following the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1992, the karbovanet was temporarily re-introduced, before the hryvnia became Ukraine’s official currency once again in 1996. The hryvnia is subdivided into 100 kopiyok, and available in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500.

† Date available will be displayed on receipt for international transfers over $15. Service and funds availability depends on certain factors including the Service selected, the selection of delayed delivery options, special terms applicable to each Service, amount sent, destination country, currency availability, regulatory issues, consumer protection issues, identification requirements, delivery restrictions, agent location hours, and differences in time zones (collectively, “Restrictions”).

* Western Union also makes money from currency exchange. When choosing a money transmitter, carefully compare both transfer fees and exchange rates. Fees, foreign exchange rates and taxes may vary by brand, channel, and location based on a number of factors. Fees and rates subject to change without notice.
