About

Before the introduction of the Jamaican dollar in 1969, the country’s currency was closely modeled on the British pre-decimalization system of pounds and shillings. When the British Empire was at its peak in the Caribbean, there were several conflicting systems of barter and coinage, plus some confusion with the favored Spanish currency. Jamaica’s $1,000 banknote features an image of their Swallowtail, a butterfly found only in Jamaica and is the largest in this hemisphere.
