Tax season can be stressful, especially if you’re waiting for a refund. The IRS tax return refund schedule outlines the key dates on which you can expect your rebate. However, the scheduled dates for tax refunds can vary depending on several factors. This could include when you filed your taxes and how you chose to receive the refund.

In this guide, we’ll provide you with everything you need to know about the IRS tax refund schedule for 2024. We’ll also answer some commonly asked questions around the 2024 tax refund calendar and provide you with some top tips on how to check the status of your refund.

What is a tax refund?

A tax refund is money you get back from the government if you have paid more income tax than necessary. These repayments are delivered by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Am I eligible for a tax refund?

Getting a tax refund depends on whether you've overpaid your income tax. If you've underpaid, the IRS will ask you to make additional payments to make up the shortfall.

When can I file my 2023 tax return?

While some people often wait until the deadline to file their tax return, others like to file as early as possible. But how soon can you file your tax return for 2023?

The IRS has not yet officially announced when it will start accepting tax returns. However, based on previous dates and information from tax filing companies, it is estimated that the IRS will begin accepting e-file tax returns on January 23, 2024. Mail 2023 tax returns are accepted from January 1st, 2024.

How do I file a tax return?

You can file your tax return electronically for free using IRS Free File, or by mail. For faster processing, e-filing options are recommended. But if you wish to send your tax return by mail, instructions can be found in Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.

You should submit your tax return no later than April 15th, 2024.

When does the IRS start issuing refunds?

There are not yet any confirmed 2024 IRS refund dates. However, based on previous years’ trends, you can find estimates below. Please note: these dates are subject to change.

Additionally, when and how your tax returns were filed will also determine when your IRS tax refund becomes available. For example, e-filed returns allow the IRS to process your refund faster than mailed returns, which can take more than 4 weeks to arrive.

However, on average the IRS aims to provide any tax refund you’re eligible for within 21 days.

Also, the earlier you file, the quicker your return can be processed.

The option you choose will determine how long your money takes to get to you. Discover more information on cashing your tax refund check.

How to check the status of your tax refund

You can monitor the status of your tax refund by using the IRS Where’s My Refund? tool. However, you should wait at least 24 hours after filing a 2023 tax return, and at least four weeks after mailing a paper return.

To use the tool, you’ll need your:

  • Social Security Number
  • Filing status
  • Exact refund amount
Calculator and pen with post-it note saying tax return

Could my tax refund be delayed?

There’s a chance your tax refund could be delayed if you mailed a paper return or if some of the information you submitted was incorrect. For example, if the Social Security Number or name on your return doesn’t match the details on IRS records, your refund may take longer to process.

Forgetting to include additional forms or making mistakes in your calculations could also increase the time it takes to receive a refund.

Getting your tax refund on a prepaid card

If you’re due to receive a tax refund this year, you may want to explore the option of receiving it on a prepaid card. Getting your tax refund onto a prepaid card can have many advantages:

1. Keep your refund separate from your regular account

Having extra money in your account may not seem like a bad thing, but you can easily end up spending your tax refund. Keeping your refund separate from your regular account can help you save money, use it for a special occasion, or make an important purchase.

2. Access your refund sooner

Prepaid cards allow you to access your refund quicker than checks, which can take longer to arrive.

3. Prepaid cards can be safer than cash

Prepaid cards can be safer than carrying cash. For example, if you’ve received a significant refund, you may not want to carry it around with you or keep it at home.

4. Access benefits and perks

Prepaid cards often include perks or benefits. For example, a Fred Meyer Rewards® Prepaid Visa® offers free groceries and discounts on fuel. Additionally, a Green Dot 5% Cash Back Visa® Debit Card offers 5% cashback. Browse our range of prepaid reloadable cards.

You can buy a prepaid card from a Kroger Money Services counter, within the Kroger Family of Stores, then fill out the relevant sections of your 1040 return form. As soon as the payment is released by the IRS, your prepaid card will be loaded with your refund amount.

Does the IRS automatically refund overpaid tax?

If your tax payments exceed what you owe, the IRS will issue you an overpayment credit. You’ll receive this credit automatically, however, you can ask them to apply it as an advanced payment towards the next tax year, instead of issuing you a refund.

How much are most tax refunds?

According to the IRS filing-season statistics, most tax refunds have averaged between $2,000 to $3,000 over the past five years. However, the 2021 tax year saw much higher tax refunds due to pandemic relief-related tax breaks.

What's the earliest you can get your tax return?

If you’ve filed a tax return, you can typically expect the funds to reach you within 21 days. However, the refund can take a little longer to arrive if you have chosen to receive your check in the mail or if some of the information you submitted was incorrect. Therefore, to ensure your tax return lands on time, make sure to double-check for errors before filing.
