The government signed the CARES Act into law on March 27, 2020 confirming a $2 trillion stimulus package for the U.S. This is to provide economic relief to tens of millions of Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you meet the stimulus check eligibility criteria, you will receive the funds via direct deposit or a paper check through the mail.

Money Services are supporting communities across the country by offering free stimulus government check cashing at all Kroger Family of Stores. You can also use prepaid cards to arrange a fast direct deposit to help make things easier for you during these difficult times.

How much are the stimulus checks worth?

Most eligible people will receive a $1,200 check from the government per individual. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is issuing all government stimulus checks.

How much you receive is based on your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) and tax filing status. To determine this, they will use your 2019 tax return (or 2018 if you haven’t prepared the latest one). Stimulus checks are worth the following amounts depending on your AGI and filing status:

Filing status AGI Stimulus check amount
Single $75,000 or less $1,200
Married filing jointly $150,000 or less $2,400
Head of household $112,500 or less $1,200
Dependents under 17* N/A +$500

*Every qualifying dependent under 17 at the end of the tax year is worth an extra $500. This sum will be added to their legal guardian’s check.

What are the stimulus check requirements?

To receive a payment from the U.S government you must meet the stimulus check eligibility criteria:

  • Have filed a tax return for the year 2018 or 2019. Alternatively, you need to have a:
    • Form SSA-1099
    • Social Security Benefit Statement
    • Form RRB-1099, Social Security Equivalent Benefit Statement
  • Have an AGI in 208 or 2019 below your filing status’ threshold
  • Be a U.S. citizen, national or U.S resident alien
  • Not be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return

When will I get my stimulus check?

The IRS has already started to send out stimulus payments in April 2020. The first payments are being delivered via direct deposit. For those without a bank account, paper checks will be sent in the mail but could take weeks or months to arrive.
