About Kentucky Utilities
When it started in 1912, Kentucky Utilities served just five properties. In 1926, KU bought Old Dominion Power, and then in 1998 KU was acquired by LG&E energy. Today, it covers 77 Kentucky counties and five in Virginia. In total, it serves 549,000 electric customers across Kentucky and also in Virginia and Tennessee – a coverage area of 4,800 square miles. LG&E merged with Kentucky Utilities in 1998 and today is owned by PPL Corporation.
Dix Dam, which formed Herrington Lake, contains hydro-electric generators used by KU. The lake, which is near Burgin, Kentucky, was formed in 1926. Distribution dispatch for KU is in Lexington.
