The company’s predecessors go all the way back to the mid-19th century. Columbia Gas is the name for 7 energy providers in Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Columbia Gas of Massachusetts was the first of the companies to be formed, in 1847, under its original name of Springfield Gas Light Company. The rest of the Columbia Gas brands came from other distinct companies, and all had become Columbia by the 1980s.
